Content Area Strategies

Before Reading

Objective:

Students will build background knowledge and understand key vocabulary before reading.

Activity:

  • Introduce key terms (soil, climate, production, sustainability)
  • Students predict meanings using context or prior knowledge
  • Class discussion connects terms to real-life agriculture

Teacher Role:

  • Model how to break down vocabulary
  • Connect terms to familiar experiences

Student Role:

  • Engage in discussion
  • Record vocabulary meanings
  • Make predictions about the text

Why This Matters:

This prepares students for complex reading by reducing confusion and activating prior knowledge.

During Reading

Objective:

Students will actively engage with the text and monitor their understanding.

Annotation Guide:

  • Star Important ideas
  • ? Questions/confusion
  • ! Surprising facts
  • Underline = real-world connections
  • Circle = new vocabulary

Teacher Modeling:

“We will read together and mark important ideas. I’m adding a star here because this shows how corn is used widely…”

Student Activity:

  • Annotate independently or in pairs
  • Use at least 3 symbols
  • Share findings with a partner

Discussion:

  • Share one question
  • Share one important idea
  • Connect to real-world agriculture

Assessment:

  • Teacher reviews annotations
  • Observes participation

Rationale:

Annotation helps students slow down, think critically, and engage with complex agricultural texts.

After Reading

Objective:

Students will demonstrate understanding and reflect on their learning.

Activity:

Students complete an exit ticket:

  • One important idea
  • One connection to real-world agriculture
  • One question

Discussion:

  • Students share responses
  • Class reflects on key concepts

Assessment:

  • Exit tickets collected and reviewed
  • Informal observation

Why This Matters:

This strategy reinforces comprehension, encourages reflection, and helps identify areas of confusion.
